In a heartwarming holiday episode of Diamond Podcast, host Alfredo Diamond sat down with Dr. Matthew Hicks, Superintendent of Northeast North Eastern Wayne Community Schools, for an insightful discussion about education, leadership, and personal growth.

Dr. Hicks shared his journey from growing up in the small town of Dayton, Indiana, to becoming an educational leader. His path wasn’t always straightforward – beginning as a psychology major at Purdue University before discovering his true calling in education through summer camp counseling experiences. This revelation, combined with the influence of inspiring teachers from his past, led him to pursue a career in teaching.

One of the most touching moments of the conversation came when Dr. Hicks discussed how his personal experience with his parents’ divorce at age 11 has helped him connect with and support students going through similar situations. He emphasized the importance of helping children understand that they’re not responsible for their parents’ decisions and that there can be positive outcomes despite difficult circumstances.

The discussion took a serious turn as Dr. Hicks spoke about his involvement with the Principal Recovery Network, an organization founded in 2019 that supports schools affected by shootings. Having experienced a school shooting firsthand while working as an assistant principal at Noblesville West Middle School in 2018, Dr. Hicks brings valuable insight to his current role in school safety and mental health support.

As Superintendent, Dr. Hicks oversees a comprehensive administrative team and works closely with the school board to ensure alignment with community needs. He’s particularly passionate about the district’s workplace learning initiatives, partnering with local businesses like Hills Pet to provide students with real-world experience and career exposure – opportunities he wishes he had as a student.

Throughout the conversation, Dr. Hicks’s dedication to education and student well-being shone through. He credited his success to mentors like Dr. Matt Mack Hagley, who encouraged him to pursue administration, demonstrating the lasting impact of positive leadership in education.

The interview revealed a leader who combines professional expertise with personal experience to create a more supportive and opportunity-rich environment for students. His approach to education emphasizes not just academic success, but also emotional well-being and career readiness, preparing students for whatever path they choose to pursue.
